We’ve all seen ‘before and after’ photos of people before and after anti-wrinkle injections, and just how effective they can be for turning back the clock on wrinkles.
But one of the questions we’re asked the most by our patients here at Denpure, is ‘can anti-wrinkle injections prevent lines and wrinkles from forming?’ It’s a great question, and we’ve got the answer for you… yes.
Anti-wrinkle injections are a non-surgical means to reverse the inevitable formation of wrinkles and lines. They are completely safe, but only when performed by a practitioner with a medical background.
Anti-wrinkle injections have a muscle-relaxing effect. Once injected at a specific site, the nerve can’t communicate with the muscle to tell it to contract and form a wrinkle. So, for the duration of the time anti-wrinkle injections take effect (3-4 months) no new wrinkles can emerge.
To maximise the results of treatment and to give yourself maximum prevention against wrinkles, you should wear SPF and refrain from smoking (these are the two biggest culprits for premature wrinkles). The effects of anti-wrinkle treatment are hugely undermined when sun and tobacco-related skin damage are at play.
Wrinkle correction treatment is available to adults over the age of 18, though as responsible medical professionals, we would advise against having treatment at so young an age.
Collagen and elastin loss occurs around our mid-20s, which is when our skin begins to struggle to retain its elasticity. This is when fine lines start to appear. The delicate skin in the eye area tends to be where signs of ageing first manifest themselves, as this area of skin is much thinner than at other sites across the face. However, genetics can play a role in where your first wrinkles start to appear.
With this in mind, if you’re seeking preventive treatment, we recommend starting wrinkle correction towards your late 20s/early 30s. When you visit us for your consultation, our Aesthetician Angela (who is also a dental surgeon) will study your skin and let you know if you are a good candidate for treatment, taking the following into account:
As you reach your mid-20s, you will notice dynamic wrinkles start to occur – these are those created when we exhibit facial expressions like frowning and laughing. You’ll notice that when you stop making these expressions, the wrinkle ceases to be there too.
Wrinkle correction treatment can slow the process of these dynamic wrinkles becoming static in the future. If you’re someone with an expressive face, preventive treatment to diminish dynamic wrinkles could be a good solution for graceful ageing.
As we all use our faces differently, treatment will vary from patient to patient. For example, someone who regularly raises them eyebrows will require wrinkle correction for dynamic wrinkles on the forehead, whilst someone who frowns a lot will require treatment for dynamic frown lines.
Don’t worry though. Preventive wrinkle correction treatment won’t rob you of the natural facial expressions that make you unique. Our approach is to use strategically placed, small amounts of muscle relaxant that will preserve your natural features and accentuate your natural beauty.
Anti-wrinkle injections will continue to have preventive effects when you reach your 40s. However, the results can appear less natural as more muscle relaxant is needed to achieve the desired effect.
If you have developed deeper lines and wrinkles, we recommend a combination of:
Medical professionals make the best aesthetic practitioners, particularly dentists.
At Denpure, we’re fortunate enough to have the talents of Dr Angela Simoes, who has studied injection techniques in depth. Her background as a dentist is hugely informative for her practice as an aesthetician, giving her the opportunity to study faces every day. With this knowledge and training at her disposal, Dr Angela can carry out medically appropriate and effective wrinkle correction treatment.
Here at Denpure, we offer wrinkle correction consultations with Dr Angela. This is an excellent opportunity to find out if non-surgical medical aesthetics are the right route for you.
We will always be transparent about the potential limitations of treatment, and we can only perform injectable treatment if you are clinically suitable.
