Declaring The Clinical Limitations Of Treatment

There is absolutely no space for salesy tactics in the world of healthcare, and to try and “sell” our patients a certain treatment would be tantamount to abusing our duty of care.

We will always make you aware of the clinical limitations of any given treatment, and whilst we have ways to ensure predictable treatment outcomes, we will never promise you the earth.

If you aren’t a good fit for a given treatment, we will explore alternative treatment options, or guide your oral health to a stage where your desired treatment becomes possible. For example, many patients with low jawbone density are not suited to implant-based treatments. However, following a bone regeneration procedure such as a bone graft or a sinus lift, we can start to revisit your suitability for treatment.

 

Being Transparent About The Steps Involved

There is great variation as to what’s involved dental treatment to dental treatment.

If you’re considering 2 or 3 treatments, and you’re unsure which suits you best, we will outline exactly what’s involved, and how the process will affect your teeth.

Whilst some patients don’t mind undergoing multi-step treatments, others may be seeking the swiftest solution, or the least invasive.

We will ask you several questions about your lifestyle, to help you come to a decision. For example, patients seeking teeth-straightening treatment may wish to consider the at-home maintenance involved. Meanwhile, patients who would like dental implants will need to weigh up whether or not they are happy to undergo a surgical process to have the implant placed.

Preparing you for your treatment

One of the key ways to help our patients (nervous patients in particular), is to make sure they are prepared for treatment – this means clinically prepared and emotionally prepared.

Clinically preparing patients for treatment

This involves asking patients to disclose relevant details about their medical history prior to a treatment to ensure they are clinically suitable. For example, we recommend that pregnant patients have their treatment in the second trimester, as they may struggle to lie comfortably in the dentist’s chair during their third trimester.

Emotionally preparing patients for treatment

Making sure patients are emotionally settled before and during their treatment is just as important as preparing them clinically.

This involves:

  • Outlining everything you can expect from treatment in a fully-costed and thorough treatment plan.
  • Reiterating the treatment steps to you in person and making sure you are comfortable with everything involved during a given procedure.
  • Asking if you require sedation to help you relax. This is recommended for nervous patients and for lengthy dental procedures.
  • Establishing a “safe” word we can use during your procedure in case you need to stop at any stage.

Communicating clearly and efficiently with our patients is incredibly important to us. Without a clear line of communication with you at every stage of your treatment process, building mutual trust and respect is simply not possible.

If you have opted for a multi-step treatment such as dental implants or Invisalign (for example), we will make sure you have a point of contact at all times.

We take the aftercare step of any treatment very seriously and encourage you to get in touch if anything feels amiss after a given procedure. Remember that when it comes to your health, there’s no such thing as a silly question!
