The clunky and conspicuous brace designs of the past were a huge barrier for adult patients. Not only are metal brace designs more compact and lighter, but there’s the option of sidestepping metal braces altogether – Invisalign.
Invisalign is a clear aligner system, designed with adult patients in mind. The features and benefits are as follows:
Discreet
The aligners are made from custom-shaped BPA-free plastic. They are transparent and therefore very discreet once placed over your teeth.
Patient-friendly
The core idea behind the Invisalign protocol was to render teeth straightening more appealing to adults. At the time of writing, Invisalign has treated over 12.5 million adults worldwide. So, this has certainly worked.
Treatment gives you the freedom to take your aligners out at mealtimes, and for brushing and flossing your teeth. Thanks to the sophisticated ClinCheck system, your dentist can produce a highly accurate mock-up of your teeth’s final position after Invisalign. This is generated using 3D clinical images of the movements your teeth will go through at each interval, and it gives patients a great deal of motivation and confidence prior to starting.
Fewer appointments
The number of appointments associated with fixed metal braces has long been a turn-off for busy adults, who don’t have time to attend frequent dentist visits over a 12-24-month period.
Invisalign requires fewer appointments compared with metal braces, as there is no need to tighten the brace at regular intervals. Instead, at home you will change over the aligners every 2 weeks and come in every 8 weeks for a check-up (compared with 4-6 weeks in the case of metal braces).
As we have explored above, age isn’t a factor when it comes to teeth straightening with Invisalign. However, there are prerequisites.
Your teeth and gums must be in good health, and not suffering from decay or gum disease. If you would like to go ahead with Invisalign, these issues will need to be addressed first. We will take clinical photographs and X-rays to gain an understanding of your dental and hygiene status.
The other factor to consider is that there is a certain level of discipline required as part of Invisalign treatment. So, if you’re someone who feels they might struggle with forgetting to wear their aligners for the required 20-22 hours each day, Invisalign might not be for you.
