If you’ve been researching tooth replacement, you’ll have come across dental implants, which involve a surgical procedure to have the implant fitted into the jawbone.
At face value, this may sound like a painful process, but in the hands of responsible dental professionals, there’s no reason why implant placement should be painful.
At Denpure, placing implants is something we do best. We’re confident we can deliver the pain-free implant journey you deserve, but we understand your concerns surrounding the surgery.
Take a look at our insights surrounding the implant placement process, and our honest outlook on what to expect.
Implant surgery is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic. The process involves your dentist numbing the gum and implanting a small titanium replacement tooth root into the gum.
As the anaesthetic is administered, you shouldn’t feel anything except mild to moderate pressure at the treatment site. Our dentists are highly skilled at ensuring the anaesthetic takes effect across the entirety of the small treatment site area. We also won’t start any treatment until we’re 100% convinced you can’t feel a thing.
If you’ve opted for IV sedation, a separate dentist will monitor your vitals throughout the implant process, whilst an implant dentist places your implant. We’ll discuss IV sedation a little later in the blog.
Seeking treatment abroad
Travelling abroad for cut-price dental treatment can put you at risk of pain during your implant surgery.
This is because some countries do not impose the same strict in-surgery standards as those imposed by the GDC (General Dental Council) in the UK, which can result in substandard processes, and as a consequence, short and long-term dental pain.
Failing to be honest about your medical history
During your implant consultation, you will be asked to outline your medical history and to let us know of any medication (prescription and non-prescription) you’re on.
It’s vitally important that you’re honest about your medical history, as some medications may interfere with the effects of the sedation.
Refusing IV sedation if you’re a nervous patient
If you’re a nervous patient and you don’t opt for IV sedation, you may find implant surgery emotionally painful.
IV sedation is intravenous sedation, administered directly into a vein on the back of the hand. It brings about feelings of deep relaxation and well-being, which is why it’s strongly recommended for nervous patients prior to implant surgery.
Many nervous patients with dental trauma have significantly benefitted from IV sedation here at Denpure. Once under the effects of sedation, they feel instantly emotionally calm, safe, and unaffected by dental trauma.
As always, we’ll be transparent with our patients. Yes, you may experience some mild to moderate discomfort following the surgery as the anaesthetic starts to wear off. This pain is manageable with over-the-counter painkillers, and you should be able to go back to work after 24 hours.
You should not feel any pain after 2-3 days, and we encourage you to contact us if the pain exceeds this timeframe.
You may experience pain and irritation if you smoke during the healing period, particularly in the 2 weeks after your implant has been placed. We strongly advise against smoking, as it cuts off the essential blood supply to the gums, seriously impacting the healing period. Smoking can even cause implant integration with the jawbone to fail, rendering the implant surgery redundant.
Whilst it is possible to have the implant surgery process carried out a second time, as medical professionals, the last thing we want is for patients to have to take time out to have their implant surgery repeated.
In the vast majority of cases, patients are genuinely surprised at how straightforward their implant surgery is (don’t take our word for it though, read our reviews!)
The word ‘surgery’ is usually what patients are most concerned about (which we completely emphasise with). We’re pleased to say that surgery is no longer a byword for pain, especially in the private dental sector.
As a private dentist in Uxbridge, we have invested in technology and training that allows us to perform gentle implant surgery. The sterilisation methods and equipment we use also eradicate the risk of post-surgery complications, and we take ample time to carry out your surgery with the utmost clinical diligence.
Over the years, we’ve performed hundreds of successful implant surgeries and maintained excellent success rates of over 95% after 5-10 years.
There’s nothing we’re more concerned about than your welfare and comfort, as we know how easy it can be for nervous patients to fracture their relationship with the dentist even further. It’s our goal to show patients that there’s nothing to fear, especially if they’ve taken the life-changing and wise decision to address the debilitating issue of tooth loss.
We are one of the most competitively priced dental practices in the Uxbridge area. We believe in fair prices all year round and offer 0% Payment Plans to help you spread the cost of your treatment over a period of time that suits you.
